Frequently Asked Questions

No. The Spartan Safe App is a dedicated campus safety tool that provides features like tip reporting, safety and well-being resources, and direct contact with UNCG Police, while the UNCG Mobile App is a broader university app offering general campus information, news, and services. To learn more about UNCG Mobile, visit the UNCG Mobile App web page.

When you get to the login screen, enter your UNCG email address. If prompted, click Sign in with UNCG SSO and log in with your UNCG credentials.

Enabling your location services, notification services, Wi-Fi and data services is recommended in order to fully use SafeZone.

Once you download the app, a series of prompts will give you the opportunity to enable most of these. These services will allow UNCG Police to accurately locate you during a check-in or an emergency.

Ensuring that your precise location is shared will help UNCGPD find you in an emergency. Android users can enable this through the prompts that appear after downloading and registering with the app. iPhone users can enable this by visiting SafeZone in the Settings app.

Importantly, SafeZone will not share your location with UNCGPD until you call or chat for help, check in, or submit a tip.

By always allowing access to location, you can check-in and then continue to use your phone as normal while SafeZone operates in the background. If “only while using” is selected your location will stop being shared if you exit the app. This could prevent effective emergency response in the event that you close out of the app.

NOTE: Always allowing access does not mean your location is always shared with police. Your location is only shared when you actively raise an alert or check in.

No. Your location is only sent to UNCGPD when you choose to share that information through certain functions. When you request a Walk Safe, submit a tip, or use one of the emergency features or check-in features, your location will be shared with the UNCG Police.

When you submit a tip, your current location is only submitted once and is attached to that tip.

When you press “UNCG Police,” a notification is sent to the UNCG Police Communications Center letting them know that you need assistance. You will then have the option to call or chat with a UNCG Police Telecommunicator or call 911.

You have five seconds to cancel the notification before it is sent. If you would like to bypass the five second delay, simply press the UNCG Police button five times quickly to be connected immediately with a UNCG Police Telecommunicator.

When you press the “Non-Emergency” button, the app will open the dialer on your phone and call the non-emergency line for the UNCG Police Communications Center.

The Check-In function allows users to share their location with the UNCG Police Communications Center. Once enabled, a telecommunicator can monitor your location as long as the check-in is still active. No request for emergency help will be sent unless the user taps the emergency button in the app.

You can also use this feature if you want to inform the UNCG Police that you are safe during an emergency on campus.

The Check-In Timer allows users to share their location with the UNCG Police Communications Center for a set amount of time. If the user does not select “Cancel” within that time, a telecommunicator will call the user. If the user cannot be reached, emergency help will be sent to their location.

The Motion & Fitness Activity allows SafeZone to detect if you have fallen to alert the UNCG Police Communications Center while using the Check-In Timer feature. It also allows the app to detect when you are moving or stationary.

If you accidentally press any SafeZone call button, such as emergency or “UNCG Police” buttons, a countdown timer will start. While it counts down, you have five seconds to press the button again to cancel the notification. If the notification has been sent, you can still cancel your request, but you will be contacted by a UNCG Police Telecommunicator to ensure your safety. Please answer their call or message to confirm you are safe.

SafeZone will operate at any location. If you request emergency assistance/tap the emergency button off campus, the app will call the local police department.

To submit reports and tips of unsafe conditions or crimes on campus click on the menu button in the top left corner of the app and choose “Tip Reporting.” From that menu you can choose between several different categories of tips, such as assault, disturbance, suspicious activity, or simply Chat with PD if none of the other categories apply.
